#1 AN ARTISTIC TOUCH
| | The formal garden of this
landmark 1926 home was
totally overgrown when
the present owner bought it. A koi
pond hidden in the untended
garden was redesigned. Drought
resistant species are emphasized
with drifts of planting in color-
coordinated splendor. There are
wide, easy to navigate stairways
and pathways. This will be the site of our Garden Gift Shop and plant sale as well as our free refreshments. |
#2 A CLASSICAL RENAISSANCE
| | This extensive, once formal
113-year-old garden, originally designed by Willis
Polk of Filoli Gardens fame, has
given way to controlled chaos.
There are still espaliered apple
trees here, along with 1000
different plants--many of unusual
varieties. The owners travel far
and wide to acquire rare and
endangered plant species and are
happy to share their knowledge
and experience. |
#3 ATTENTION TO DETAIL
| | This small, charming garden
features bonsais in the front
yard, a weeping cherry tree,
an Australian butterspoon tree and
other unusual plants. Every inch
of the garden shows the owners'
loving focus. The pathways are
easy to navigate and you will
encounter beauty and interest
everywhere you turn.
Everything is on one level here and well worth the visit. |
#4 A QUINTESSENTIAL HILLSIDE GARDEN
| | This downhill Montclair
garden was designed 30
years ago by the well-
known team of Konrad and
Denise Gauder of Landsculpture.
The
vegetation has evolved and
the trees have matured, but the
dramatic curvilenear structure
remains unchanged.. The terraced back garden, while a little challenging to traverse, is lush and colorful all year round and full of rare and unusual flowering specimens. |
#5 A GARDENER'S GARDEN
| | This garden has a huge
variety of plants including
several tropical species
made viable due to the area's
micro-climate. A gray-water
system, a chicken coop, rainwater
storage, a lily pond and a night-
blooming cereus cactus are a few
of the highlights. The owner, a professional landscape designer, will conduct an informative tour of the property and its innovative features. |
#6 A STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN
| | This spectacular garden goes
up and up--a truly impressive testament to hillside
gardening. The owners are expert
growers of bromeliads, orchids
and succulents, many of which
are in bloom at any given time.
There are several greenhouses and
lath houses, each containing
dozens of rare and unusual species
from around the world. Every inch
of this garden will surprise and
and delight, making it well-worth
the climb. |
#7 AN ARTFUL LABYRINTH
| | This acre-plus organic garden
uses no pesticides or fertilizer. The property is a
former llama farm, with the hard-
scape and rolling terrain installed
in 1986. This garden of many
rooms is a maze of tiled and inlaid
pathways, mosaics and a fountain
inspired by the springs and
waterfalls of the owner's native
land of Ecuador. There are dozens of whimsical
sculptures from local artists and
several benches and seating areas. |
